Have you noticed that in some search results, Google is now showing a photo of the author next to the information? Google is piloting the display of author information for posts and pages in its search results to “help users discover great content”.

Examples of this in action, and the information on how to take advantage of this are available on Google’s Author information in search results page.

In a nutshell, in a bid to boost the results of content written by real people rather than the plethora of spammy directories and link farms, if you can show your information is written by a “real’ person, which is done via your Google(+) Profile, it gets a boost in Google search results.

There are currently 2 methods you can choose from to implement this, both of which require you to have a Google profile with a real photo of you (a head shot), to which you add the website(s) you contribute to in a new “Contributes to” section.

The benefits of making use of Google Authorship include:

It makes your content stand out. It’s a really simple way to get a big boost in search rankings.

It provides more exposure. The addition of a photo, how many Google+ circles you belong to, and a link to more content by you helps people find you and your content. I personally think this has tremendous potential for giving Rotary a higher profile and show the more human side of Rotary if you make use of this on Rotary websites.

More metrics in Webmaster Tools. If you don’t use Google Webmaster Tools yet, I encourage you to do so – there is a wealth of information in there which can help you see what people are interested in.

What do you think? Will you be implementing this in your sites?

ROSNF Chair Chat December 26, 2011

Happy holidays! It will soon be 2012. Congratulation to Philip
Merritt who won the election and will take over as ROSNF Chair on July 1, 2012.

In this last week of 2011, ROSNF members are actively helping Rotary
International compete for free air miles donation. All Rotarians,
Rotaractors, and friends of Rotary are encouraged to vote every day here:

http://10millioncharitymiles.com/

Back on December 18, Rotary was #18 and today we are #3 with 10.4% of the
total votes. All Rotary needs to move into the #2 spot is 13.1%. The
allocation of 10 million air miles will be by percentage so every vote counts.
Rotary can use these air miles to help transport vaccine, supplies, and
volunteers working to eradicate polio and save millions of children from this
disease now and in future generations. Please vote every day through Dec.
31, 2011.

This month both Facebook and ROSNF are releasing new timeline support.
Facebook has a new profile option where each user can define their own timeline
of events. This is scheduled to become the default profile format.
At the same time ROSNF has published its Global Club Directory Facebook
application version 1.0.10 with support for each club to define its own timeline
of service events. In addition, club fellowship, fundraisers, speakers,
district, zone, and RI events can be added. For example, if you go to the
application and select “Search Events”, select event type “RI”, and click
“Search Events”, you will see display of all the RI Conventions starting with
2011 through 2017 including links to Facebook pages where available. Help
update your club’s timeline of service and contribute to the larger district,
zone, and all of Rotary timeline of service which you can view by selecting
“Search Events”, select type “Service Events”, and click “Search”. You can
try this Facebook application here:

https://apps.facebook.com/rosnf_gcd/

Guz Goh, the ROSNF Convention Committee Chair for the RI Bangkok Convention
is busy planning for the ROSNF Booth, annual general meeting, and other ROSNF
activities at the convention. Make plans to visit the ROSNF booth and meet
fellow ROSNF members face to face. You can also buy a ROSNF “Like” button
while they last.

During the next several weeks, the ROSNF Board will be brainstorming on ROSNF
project goals during the next 6 months. If you have suggestions, please
feel free to send them to any board member or post them on one of the ROSNF
social networks.

Happy New Year!

ROSNF Chair Chat October 17, 2011

One of the ROSNF goals for this Rotary year is to promote the creation of

Rotary club and Rotaract club Facebook pages. I’m pleased to report

several significant steps in support of this goal are underway. First

Rotary International is conducting several Webinars this month on social

networking with the help of ROSNF Charter Chair, Simone Carot Collins. The

next webinar is Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 at 7 PM EST. These webinars

encourage the creation of club Facebook pages:

http://www.rotary.org/en/mediaandnews/multimedia/webinars/Pages/ridefault.aspx

Second, Rotary International has also supported this effort by

publishing the following article about creating club Facebook pages on the

Rotary website:

http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/111007_news_facebook.aspx

Finally ROSNF has launched its first Facebook application called ROSNF Global

Club Directory which enables Rotarians and Rotaractors on Facebook to list their

club along with link to their Facebook club page. Early adaptor ROSNF

members have now added 40 clubs in the directory which you can checkout here:

https://apps.facebook.com/rosnf_gcd/

On another topic, this week ROSNF will be announcing candidates for the upcoming election of ROSNF Chair for 2012-2013 Rotary year and a statement by each candidate will be provided. Look for the announcement, and be sure to vote for candidate of your choice.

Rotary International and the Rotarians on Social Networks Fellowship encourages the use of social media networks to foster fellowship in furtherance of the service Rotarians provide locally and worldwide.

Currently the most-used social media network is Facebook. Within the world of Rotary, thousands of friendships and many service projects have grown and flourished. However, in the use of Facebook, we have found an issue to address, in order to help Rotary, Rotaract, and Interact Clubs, and Rotary Districts, maximize the benefits of using Facebook.

We strongly advocate that a Club or District establish their public presence on Facebook as a “Page“, and should you choose to create a private internal discussion hub, that would be a “Group“.

If you have established your Club or District as a “person” with a profile, we recommend that you switch to a Page as soon as possible.

We recommend this for two reasons:

While there is a limit to how many Facebook “friends” someone may have, there is no current limit on how many Facebook users, inside and outside of Rotary, can “like” your Page. As a matter of public image and as a matter of membership growth, a Page is the best alternative.

A “person” on Facebook must be a real person. To establish a Rotary Club as a “person” on Facebook with a “profile” is a violation of Facebook’s terms of service. While it is up to Facebook whether or not to enforce their own provisions, Rotary International and ROSNF are concerned that Facebook will decide to enforce their rules. They could close down the accounts of Rotary Clubs who have established their presences on Facebook as a “person”, and those Clubs will lose their photos and information and have to start over without the ease of transferring the materials within Facebook.

In summary, Rotary International and Rotarians on Social Networks Fellowship continue to encourage Rotarians and Clubs to use social networks to advance the Object of Rotary, and we strongly suggest that on Facebook in particular we exercise care not to violate that company’s terms of service and establish a Club or a District as a Page and not a “person”.
